Klaus Mann nacque nel 1906 a Monaco di Baviera, primo figlio maschio dello scrittore Thomas Mann. Attivista politico e assiduo frequentatore dell’ambiente intellettuale ai tempi di Weimar, nel 1933 scelse l’esilio, in aperta opposizione con il nuovo regime. A questi anni risale anche la decisione di dedicarsi a tempo pieno all’attività letteraria, che culminò con opere importanti come Sinfonia patetica (1935), Mephisto (1936) e Il vulcano (1939), incentrato sulla condizione degli esuli tedeschi durante il nazismo. La sua vita intensa e tormentata, segnata dalla solitaria condizione di apolide, dall’abuso di droghe e da una dichiarata omosessualità, si concluse tragicamente a Cannes, dove morì suicida nel 1949.
